Viernes, el 14 junio

Hello all.  Homework for this evening is the following:
  • All students have a reading about Don Quijote and a worksheet to go along with it.  They also have to complete Exercise 9 on page 233 in the textbook.  These will be considered two separate homework assignments and I reserve the right to collect part or all of it to count as a quiz grade.
This will be the last homework of the year!  Yay, summer is almost here!

Extra Credt #2

In class this week we did Exercise 4 on p. 229 and Ex. 5 on p. 230.

  • Write out Exercise 4 with complete Spanish sentences.  This is worth one point.
  • Write out Exercise 5 with complete Spanish sentences and then translate those sentences into English.  This is worth one point.  Remember that the best way to translate these "hace time" expressions is to use this model:
             Hace tres días que estoy enferma.
             I've been sick for three days.

I will accept this assignment until 2:15 on friday, June 14.

Hola!  All Spanish 2 students have the following homework this weekend:
  • Complete the "Hoja de Mandatos" worksheet
  • Complete the "Rompecabezas" worksheet (it is the other side of the worksheet that we started in class today and says "92" at the bottom).
Since the grammar we are covering is a review of material learned previously, there is a very good chance that I will be giving a homework quiz in the next class.  I will ask you to write out your answers to certain examples and turn it in for a quiz grade.  So be sure to do a good job and look up any verbs that you think may have irregular forms.

Jueves, el 9 de mayo

All students in Spanish 2 have an exercise to complete from the textbook.  It is Exercise 4 on p. 145.  In this exercise, students need to choose between a verb in preterite or in imperfect.  Students do not need to write out the whole paragraph.

There will be no quiz this week.  We will be quizzing next week on the difference between preterite and imperfect next week.  The Unit Test has been postponed until the week of May 20.  Details to follow.

Extra credit #1

This extra credit assignment is worth up to 2 extra credit points, based on your accuracy.

Complete Exercise 11 on page 138 of the text.  Follow the model and write complete sentences in Spanish using forms of the imperfect and the preterite (imperfect in the first clause, preterite in the second).  After you have written all the Spanish sentences, go back and translate those sentences into English.  (Note:  Remember that the word "mientras," which means "while," indicates that an ongoing action is taking place, which is best translated into English using a form of "was/were + -ing").

This assignment is due Monday (lunes, 3l 13 de mayo).  It is perfectly acceptable to come to do this assignment during Monday's Department Night if you don't have time this weekend!

Hello all,

I will be in Canada on a French field trip on May 2-May 5.  During that time, students will have two days in class to complete the Spanish regions project that we have been working on these past few weeks.  There will be no additional homework.

All information about the project can be found on the Weebly site:

Projects are due on Monday, May 6 for students in Periods 4 and 6 and on Tuesday May 7 for students in Period 7.  All students should come to class on Monday with a paper to hand in and be ready to do their oral presentation on Monday.

Late projects will lose 10 points a day.  I will not accept any projects after Wednesday, May 8.

Extra Credit #2

Go to the website studyspanish.com. Click on "Verb drills" and take some online quizzes with 15 questions practicing the forms of the imperfect. You will receive one extra credit point for each quiz that you pass with at least a grade of 80% (no more than three quizzes please).  Then either print out screenshots of your graded quiz with your score or send them to me via email. I will accept quizzes until 11:59pm on Wednesday, March 27.

This week all students were introduced to the Spanish 2 research project.  Students were assigned a region of Spain and are creating a written report and oral presentation about the region.

More information about this project can be found at:

The first part of this assignment is due next Thursday (jueves, el 28 de marzo). Students must turn in a resource handout outlining the information they plan to include in the project and resources they will be using for the assignment.  A list of resources has been provided for them, but students may use additional resources as necessary.  A website evaluation rubric must be filled out with a score of 15 or higher for every additional resource students use for their information.

Additionally, the second timeline draft is due this week.  Any student is welcome to come to Department Night on Monday (lunes, el 25 de marzo) for editing help.

Restaurant dialogue prompt

Prepare a dialogue in which two friends go out to eat in a restaurant.

  • Each person should order a drink, main course, and, later on, dessert.
  • One person should have some sort of "problem" with the food, restaurant, or service that is resolved in the dialogue.
  • Include lines from both customers and the waiter.
  • The customers should ask for the check and talk about a tip.
  • You should use at least one direct object pronoun (lo, la, los or las) and one indirect object pronoun (me, te, le, nos, os or les).
  • You should use at least two stem-changing verbs in present tense in your dialogue.
  • You should use at least three verbs in preterite tense.

Links to practice irregular preterites

I've had a request for some online practice with irregular preterites.  The links below lead to online quizzes that you can take to practice your irregular preterites.  Please be aware that some of the verbs in these links are verbs that we may have not covered in class, so I have added them for you.
http://www.quia.com/quiz/252898.html : This includes the verb "conducir (to drive)."  The stem is "conduj-" and it takes the same endings as other irregular preterites. 

http://www.studyspanish.com/practice/pret6.htm : This includes the verb "caber (to fit)."  The stem is "cup-" and it takes the same endings as other irregular preterites. 

http://www.spanishspanish.com/pret1_practice.html : This includes both verbs mentioned in the previous links as well as "traducir (to translate)."  The stem is "traduj-" and it takes the same endings as other irregular preterites.

Welcome back to school!  I hope everyone had an enjoyable vacation.  I had many tired students in class today.

Students in Period 7 must complete the reading and handout given to them in class on 2/14 for tomorrow (martes, el 26 de febrero).

Students in Periods 4 and 6 must do activities 4 and 5 on page 71 of the text in complete sentences for their next class.

Students in Periods 4 and 6 have a worksheet on irregular preterites to complete for tomorrow (martes, el 12 de febrero).  Students in Period 7 need to complete homework assigned in class on Thursday.  See Thursday's blog for this assignment.

All students took a quiz today.  They also turned in their Spanish 1 texts and received the Spanish 2 texts.

Homework for this evening is Exercise 10 on page 85 and Exercise 12 on p. 87 of the Spanish 2 textbooks.

Also, all students need to have their textbooks covered by February vacation.  This will count as a homework grade.

Viernes, el 25 de enero

Jueves, el 24 de enero

All students took a Unit Test today on Unit 5. Any student who was absent today should make arrangements to stay after for Department Night on Monday of next week (lunes, el 28 de enero) or in the library for homework club on Tuesday (martes, el 29 de enero) or Thursday (jueves, el 31 de enero) for a makeup.

I will not be in class tomorrow (viernes, el 25 de enero) because I will be on the New York field trip with Mrs. Ragno and her students.  I have left two assignments.  One is called "La Tomatina." Students have a handout with a short selection that they need to read and two activities that they need to complete on the opposite side.  When completed, students need to copy new vocabulary from page 417 "Talking about Professions" into their notebooks in both Spanish and English and complete a worksheet with some vocabulary exercises afterwards.

There will be no homework in Spanish 2 this week due to the Unit Test on Thursday. I hope all students will use this as an opportunity to review for the test.

Thursday's Unit Test will cover Unit 5.

Students are welcome to come and see me today in the library and any morning from 7:30 until the first class begins with any questions or to ask for extra help.

A word about your restaurant dialogues

Finally, FINALLY I have graded your restaurant dialogues.  I apologize that it took me so long.

This weekend I will post grades for that writing assignment on Powerschool.  I will be keeping the writing assignments because I want to compare them with a future, similar writing assignment to see how students have improved over time.  Students have an opportunity to revise to score a higher grade (except for those with 100s, of course).  In order to revise, students will need to come and see me for a quick writing conference where I will explain what can be done to improve the writing grade.  I am available Monday after school during Department Night and most mornings.  After that conference, students will need to come see me again to revise the first writing assignment after school on Monday in Department Night or after school Tuesday or Thursday during Homework Club.  Just like the first draft, the second draft must be completed with no book, dictionary or notes.

  • Haz la Actividad 2 de la página 386 (Puedes escribirla en el papel con las Actividades 8 y 9).
Los estudiantes del Período 4 no tiene tarea escrita, pero tienen que estudiar porque hay una prueba en la próxima clase.  La prueba se trata del pretérito (Ve las páginas 376-378).

No olvides (Don't forget) que hay una prueba viernes también que se trata de vocabulario (Ve la página 389).
